The weather system has already led to significant rainfall across the region, causing widespread disruptions.

As of October 17, 2024, the IMD predicts isolated very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in parts of Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradesh. The alert extends to districts such as Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Chennai, where residents have already reported waterlogging and flooding in various areas. Visuals from the city depict people navigating knee-deep waters as streets become inundated with muddy rainwater.

Impact on Daily Life

The relentless rains have severely disrupted daily life in Chennai and surrounding areas. Public transport services have been affected significantly; Southern Railway announced the cancellation of several express trains, including the Chennai Central-Mysuru Kaveri Express, due to waterlogging. Additionally, numerous domestic flights were canceled as passenger turnout dwindled amid the adverse weather conditions.

Government Response

In response to the situation, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin stated that efforts are underway to clear waterlogging in affected areas. He announced that free food would be provided at Amma canteens on October 16 and 17 to support those impacted by the floods. Emergency services have been deployed across various districts, with over 200 boats ready for rescue operations.

Temperature and Forecast

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai, weather conditions are expected to remain generally cloudy with a high chance of rain continuing until October 22. The maximum temperature is forecasted to be around 28 degrees Celsius, while the minimum may settle at approximately 25 degrees Celsius.
