But it all came crashing down on the release day, 27th March, when morning shows were canceled due to a legal issue. Once the Delhi high court lifted the ban, the movie was screened in theatres, to the relief of the fans and critics. The relief, however, did not last long. The critics complained about the lack of storytelling that stole what could have been a gripping tale.

Reviewers said that the story of the movie and the background of the protagonist and his family were captivating and compelled them to watch through the end. However, a few felt that the editing and the writing could have been improved.
A reviewer wrote: “A raw, rustic and riveting tale on greed, power, grit, survival and vengeance through a realistic narrative.” Another said, “Somewhere things (were) lost in (the) second half (either poor writing or screenplay, or the director (was) not sure how to end this), so many dragging and unnecessary scenes filled the second half. After the excellent elevation of the hero, the director couldn’t keep up the expectations.”

Kaali was a simple store owner working to support his family- his wife and son. The happy image of a hardworking family is broken when Kaali’s friend Ravi calls him. Ravi’s son was kidnapped by Arungiri, a name Kaali recognizes. His mission to save the son while hiding his identity from his family shapes the core of the movie.
