In a significant step for defense collaboration between the United States and India, Lockheed Martin has announced a partnership with Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) for the C-130J Super Hercules Tactical Airlifter Project. The announcement was made on 10 September 2023, shortly after Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh’s visit to the United States, where discussions focused on enhancing defense ties. The C-130J Super Hercules is renowned as a tactical airlift aircraft, currently serving as the latest iteration of the C-130 Hercules, and is favored by 26 operators across 22 nations.

The partnership aims to establish a comprehensive framework for the maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) of the Indian Air Force’s existing fleet of 12 C-130J aircraft, as well as the broader Hercules fleet. Tata Advanced Systems has indicated that pending approval from both the US and Indian governments, this collaboration could also lead to the manufacturing and assembly of C-130Js in India. Additionally, it may pave the way for the production of aircraft as part of the Indian Air Force’s medium transport aircraft program.
