Stock Market Surge: Investors Gain ₹6.5 Lakh Crore in Just One Day!

Share Market Today (20 September): The Indian stock markets have set a new milestone today as the Sensex surpassed the 84,000 mark for the very first time. The index witnessed a spectacular surge of 1,360 points, while the Nifty index also achieved a record, crossing the 25,800 threshold. This remarkable rise has translated into significant profits for investors, as their cumulative wealth surged by approximately ₹6.5 lakh crore. Notably, every sectoral index on the BSE closed in the positive territory, with particularly robust performances from sectors such as realty, auto, capital goods, and banking. Both small-cap and mid-cap indices of the BSE recorded gains exceeding 1 percent.

Market Performance Overview

The BSE Sensex concluded today’s trading session with an impressive gain of 1,359.52 points, representing a 1.63 percent increase, and settled at 84,544.31. Throughout the day, the Sensex reached a new intraday high of 84,694.46. Similarly, the Nifty, comprising 50 shares, climbed 375.15 points or 1.48 percent to close at 25,790.95, after hitting an intraday high of 25,849.25.

Investor Wealth Surge

   

As of today, the total market capitalization of firms listed on the BSE has soared to ₹471.97 lakh crore, up from ₹465.47 lakh crore at the end of the previous trading session on 19 September. This ascent in market capitalization indicates an increase of around ₹6.5 lakh crore, signifying a substantial boost in investor wealth.

Top Gainers and Losers on Sensex

Highest Gaining Stocks

Out of the 30 stocks in the BSE Sensex index, 26 concluded the day positively. Mahindra & Mahindra led the charge with a remarkable gain of 5.57 percent. Other notable gainers included JSW Steel, ICICI Bank, L&T, and Bharti Airtel, which saw their stocks rise between 2.65 percent and 3.85 percent.

Biggest Losers

Conversely, only four stocks within the Sensex experienced declines today. State Bank of India (SBI) emerged as the biggest loser with a drop of 0.70 percent. Additionally, stocks of Indusind Bank, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), and Bajaj Finance declined in the range of 0.07 percent to 0.33 percent.

Stock Performance Summary

The trading day saw a high number of stocks ending in the green, demonstrating overall market strength. A total of 4,059 stocks were traded on the BSE today, with 2,468 closing with gains. In contrast, 1,482 stocks fell, and 109 stocks remained unchanged. Moreover, 265 stocks reached new 52-week highs, while 45 stocks hit new 52-week lows.
