Increase in Global Smartphone Shipments in Q3

Smartphone shipments worldwide saw an increase of approximately five percent year-on-year in the third quarter. Samsung has maintained its position as the leading Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) in terms of unit shipments, followed closely by American device maker Apple and China’s Xiaomi. However, there has been a slight decline in the market share of all three smartphone companies.

Market Share Insights

According to reports from Canalys, Samsung’s market share for the third quarter of the current year stood at 18 percent. This marks a three percent decline year-on-year. Apple secured the second position with a market share of 17 percent, down from nearly 18 percent during the same period last year. Xiaomi, although facing challenges, remains a strong contender in the competitive space.

Festive Season Boost in India

During India’s festive season, smartphone sales experienced significant growth. The first major sale for the festive season took place from September 26 to October 6, involving major e-commerce players. Amazon hosted the Great Indian Festival Sale, while Flipkart conducted its Big Billion Days Sale. Other retailers also participated in discount sales during this time. A survey conducted by TechInsights indicated that smartphone sales during the first festive sale increased by 11 percent year-on-year. Notably, this sale lasted for 11 days, extending beyond the previous years’ typical duration of seven to eight days.

Samsung’s Performance in Festive Sales

Samsung emerged as the top performer in smartphone sales during this period, capturing nearly 20 percent of the market share. The Galaxy M35, Galaxy S23, Galaxy A14, and Galaxy S23 FE were among the best-selling models for the company. Factors contributing to the increase in festive sales include an extended festive season, improved marketing strategies, and enhanced discounts offered by smartphone companies.

Challenges Facing Samsung

Despite the growth in sales, Samsung is facing challenges in its business operations. The company is planning to lay off a significant number of workers in various countries, which could lead to a workforce reduction of approximately 10 percent in some regions. This downsizing is attributed to intense competition in the market for artificial intelligence (AI)-related memory chips, with rivals like SK Hynix posing a substantial threat.

Conclusion

Overall, while the smartphone market is witnessing growth during the festive season, companies like Samsung must navigate various challenges to maintain their positions and continue to innovate in a rapidly evolving market landscape.
