PM Modi’s US Visit: Pushing for an End to the Russia-Ukraine Conflict

PM Modi’s Upcoming Visit to the US: Focus on Peace in Europe

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit the United States from September 21 to 23, marking his first official trip to the US during his third term. This visit is pivotal as it encompasses key engagements such as bilateral talks, roundtable meetings with CEOs, and events aimed at fostering relations with the Indian diaspora. A central focus of his visit will be addressing the ongoing peace efforts in Europe, particularly in light of the challenges posed by the Russia-Ukraine war, which has significant implications for the Global South.

Strengthening Global Diplomacy

In the context of international diplomacy, PM Modi’s proactive stance has positioned India as a potential mediator in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He has engaged in discussions with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Recently, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed confidence in India’s capacity to facilitate dialogue, underscoring India’s unique position as a nation outside NATO, without ulterior motives other than the restoration of peace.

Continued Engagement with Global Leaders

PM Modi’s diplomatic efforts extend beyond mere dialogue; he has actively sought solutions to the conflict. For instance, following his visit to Kiev, he undertook direct communications with both US President Joe Biden and President Putin, demonstrating his commitment to the peace process. National Security Advisor Ajit Doval also played a crucial role by briefing President Putin about India’s observations and thoughts from the Kiev visit.

India’s Stand on the War

Despite India’s proactive role, officials, including Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, have clarified that India currently lacks a concrete peace formula. The Indian government remains engaged in discussions with various global leaders to gather perspectives on the conflict. Historically, India’s stance has been clear: this is not the era for war, and meaningful resolutions cannot emerge from the battlefield. Peace negotiations must involve all relevant stakeholders.

Discussion Aimed at the QUAD Summit

This visit provides PM Modi the opportunity to convene with QUAD leaders in Delaware, where discussions surrounding the Russia-Ukraine conflict are expected to be a key topic. Modi is anticipated to articulate not only India’s position but also reflect the perspectives of Russia, Ukraine, and other nations affected by the war. Experts suggest that the language within the QUAD’s joint statement may evolve, taking into account PM Modi’s insights about the ramifications of the conflict on developing nations.

Addressing the United Nations General Assembly

Another significant aspect of Modi’s visit will be his address at the Future Summit at the United Nations General Assembly, themed ‘Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow.’ In his keynote address, PM Modi is expected to emphasize the importance of global unity and share insights from his visits to Russia and Ukraine. Through this platform, he aims to send a universal message of peace and collaboration across nations.

Overcoming Criticism and Promoting Peace

Though Prime Minister Modi has faced scrutiny from Western geopolitical analysts for his earlier engagements with Russia, including his notable visit to Moscow, he has countered this through his efforts to promote peace during his recent visit to Ukraine. His diplomatic initiatives aimed at mitigating the crisis have garnered international acknowledgment, positioning India as a key player in fostering stability in Europe.
