While discussions about Team India’s participation remain uncertain, there are indications that the matches involving India could potentially be hosted in a neutral venue outside of Pakistan. Massive Budget Allocation for Stadium Renovation
To facilitate the preparation for the Champions Trophy, the PCB has allocated an impressive budget of approximately 13 billion Pakistani rupees (around 388 crore Indian rupees) towards renovating several stadiums across the country. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has emphasized the importance of upgrading facilities, especially after acknowledging that many current stadiums are in dire need of improvement. The major venues for the tournament include Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, Karachi’s National Stadium, and Rawalpindi’s Pindi Stadium.
Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium: The Largest Investment
The Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore will see the largest portion of this budget, with approximately 7.7 billion Pakistani rupees earmarked for major renovations. Planned improvements include the construction of a new office building, upgrades to the pavilion, enhanced floodlighting, and other essential facilities that will elevate the stadium to international standards.
Other Key Venues Undergoing Renovation
Investment in Karachi’s National Stadium is set at around 3.5 billion Pakistani rupees, focusing on critical upgrades, including floodlights and infrastructure improvements. In Rawalpindi, the Pindi Stadium will receive 1.5 billion rupees for necessary renovations. However, the work at Pindi Stadium will commence later as it currently serves as an important venue for test matches, including recent series against Bangladesh and upcoming matches against England.
ICC’s Upcoming Evaluation Visit
An ICC inspection team is scheduled to visit Pakistan soon to assess the ongoing preparations for the Champions Trophy. This visit will include evaluations on the progress of stadium renovations and the establishment of security arrangements to ensure a safe environment for players and spectators alike.
