Disturbing Incident of Police Brutality in Bhubaneswar

Odisha News: A shocking case of alleged sexual assault and police brutality has emerged in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, where a woman claims to have been assaulted after seeking help from law enforcement. The situation escalated when her Army officer friend was unlawfully detained, leading to further violence against her.

Sequence of Events

The incident began when the woman and her friend were returning home after closing their restaurant at around 1 AM. They were reportedly harassed by a group of youths, prompting them to seek assistance at the Bharatpur police station. Upon arrival, they were met by a female constable in plain clothes, who the woman alleges behaved inappropriately instead of providing help.

Allegations of Misconduct and Abuse

According to the woman, instead of addressing their complaint, the police officers turned on her and her friend. “They put him (the Army officer) in the lock-up. When I objected, two female officers began to assault me,” she recounted. Following this, she claimed she was physically restrained, and a male officer brutally kicked her multiple times.

Details of the Assault

The woman has described a harrowing experience where she was tied up by officers and isolated in a room. She tried to defend herself but faced severe retaliation. “When I was being choked, I bit one officer’s hand,” she said. This only led to further violence, including physical assault while in police custody.

Response from Authorities

The National Commission for Women is taking this matter seriously and has requested an official report from the Director General of Police (DGP). Additionally, the state government has mandated a CID investigation into the incident and has suspended five police officers, including the inspector involved.

Judicial Proceedings

The woman involved was arrested under charges of assaulting police personnel and damaging property but was granted bail by the Orissa High Court. Her legal team is set to appeal for the quashing of the FIR lodged against her and the Army officer, with a court hearing scheduled on September 26.

Impact of the Incident

This incident raises critical concerns regarding police conduct and the treatment of women in distress, particularly in institutions that are meant to provide protection. The alleged actions of the police have sparked outrage and calls for accountability, emphasizing the importance of respecting the rights and dignity of all individuals.

Conclusion

The series of events in Bhubaneswar serves as a grim reminder of the systemic issues within law enforcement regarding the treatment of women and the urgent need for reforms. This case not only highlights the bravery of the victim in coming forward but also the necessity for thorough investigations to ensure justice is served.
