Empuraan And Gujarat Riots Controversy

One of the movie’s major plot points was the Gujarat Riots of 2002. Although the makers claim they didn’t intend to, a few scenes relating to Zayed’s backstory match with a few incidents surrounding the riots and the massacre that took place on 28th February in Ahmedabad’s Naroda Patiya. These relative similarities and subtexts sparked political debates and the extent of ‘freedom of expression’ in cinemas.

Soon, demands to edit and ban the film took life, and the director Prithviraj Sukumarn responded by deleting 2 minutes and 8 seconds worth of the film. The movie allegedly underwent 24 new cuts, and the re-edited version was released in theatres on Wednesday.

The lead actor, Mohanlal, also apologized to his followers and the offended individuals on social media and stated that they never intended to hurt people’s feelings.

About Empuraan: Story and Cast

All three parts in the Lucifer trilogy were and will be written by Murali Gopy. Similarly, the series was and will be directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran. At the end of Lucifer, the first part, Kureshi A’braam, AKA Steven Nedumpally, AKA Lucifer, leaves Kerala. He walks away from its politics and chooses to stay away. In his wake, Jatin assumes the CM’s throne and loses himself in a thirst for power. To satiate his greed, he turns Kerala weak and open to infiltrations from other political parties.

The common folk, caught in the crossfire of the governmental power struggle, wonder if and when their savior, Lucifer, will come back. The film then takes us back to Steven’s past, the people he met, and their backstories to provide a strong foundation for the events to come. During the time travel to Steven’s past, we discover how he rose to his now-name, Kureshi A’braam, and his plans to dethrone Jatin and save Kerala.

With Mohanlal and Prithviraj, actors Manju Warrier, Abhimanyu Singh, Rick Yune, Tovino Thomas, Indrajith Sukumaran, Saniya Iyappan, Andrea Tivadar, Jerome Flynn, Eriq Ebouaney, Kishore, Baiju, Sai Kumar, Nandu, Nyla Usha and Suraj Venjaramoodu play defining roles in Empuraan.
