This cutting-edge technology will be utilized for the very first time at an ICC-sanctioned event. According to the ICC’s official press release, every match will be covered by at least 28 cameras, ensuring comprehensive visual coverage.
Moreover, the Decision Review System (DRS) will be accessible in all matches. This innovative approach will allow TV umpires to review synchronized multi-angle footage instantly, ensuring more accurate decisions are made. The Smart Replay system enhances the traditional reviews by providing live inputs from Hawk-Eye operators who will be stationed in the same room, ensuring real-time assistance with footage obtained from eight high-speed Hawk-Eye cameras positioned around the venue.
Previously, the communication between third umpires and Hawk-Eye operators was mediated by a TV director. However, with the introduction of Smart Replay, this link is eliminated, allowing for a more streamlined and efficient review process. The technology made its debut during England’s innovative League, The Hundred, and was successfully employed in IPL 2024.
