ByteDance Cuts Jobs Amid Shift to AI Content Moderation
In a significant restructuring move, ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, is laying off hundreds of employees, with a considerable number of these job losses occurring in Malaysia. The company is increasingly adopting Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies for content moderation, prompting this decision to streamline operations and improve efficiency.
Details of the Layoffs
According to sources cited by Reuters, initial reports indicated that more than 700 workers in Malaysia would be affected by the layoffs. However, ByteDance later clarified that the actual number of affected employees is under 500. Most employees impacted are involved in content moderation, and they have been notified of their layoffs via email. In an official response to Reuters, ByteDance confirmed the layoffs and highlighted that this shift to AI is intended to enhance the quality and speed of content moderation processes. With a global workforce exceeding 110,000 employees across over 200 locations, ByteDance is undergoing a strategic evolution.
TikTok’s Challenges in the U.S. and Abroad
The changes come at a time when TikTok faces scrutiny and criticism from various fronts, particularly concerning national security risks. Former U.S. President Donald Trump labeled TikTok as a potential threat to national security, although he also acknowledged that banning the app might negatively impact its younger user base. TikTok boasts approximately 170 million users in the United States alone.
Previously, the platform was banned for government employees in the U.S., and the central government had prohibited around 60 Chinese apps, including TikTok, citing security concerns. Before the ban, TikTok had garnered an estimated 200 million users in the country and has faced allegations of promoting inappropriate content. Its ties to China have further complicated its standing in various international markets, where it continues to navigate challenges related to content regulation and data privacy.
The Popularity of TikTok
Despite these obstacles, TikTok remains a favorite among global audiences and continues to thrive in many countries. Its innovative platform encourages user-generated content and creativity, drawing millions of daily active users. As ByteDance shifts towards AI-driven moderation, the company aims to mitigate concerns surrounding content safety and security while maintaining the app’s engaging experience for users.
