BSNL’s Leap into 5G Technology

The government-owned telecom provider, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), has commenced testing its 5G network, marking a significant technological advancement amidst fierce competition from major private players like Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel. As part of its ambitious strategy, BSNL is working to deploy 100,000 4G sites by the end of the current financial year to bolster its service coverage and performance across the country.

Governmentโ€™s Support for BSNL

The central government aims to bring BSNL back into profitability, highlighting the importance of this company in India’s telecom landscape. The 5G network is undergoing tests in collaboration with the Center for Development of Telecommunications (C-DoT), which has previously provided the essential network core for BSNL’s 4G services. While this core is also compatible with 5G, it will require some upgrades to support the enhanced capabilities of the new network technology.

After Reliance Jio, BSNL is set to become the second telecommunication firm to implement an indigenous network in its 5G rollout, showcasing India’s growing self-reliance in technology.

Innovative Services and Applications

Recently, BSNL has launched the ‘BSNL Live TV’ application, targeting Android TV users. Although the app’s specific features remain undisclosed, it integrates Internet, Cable TV, and landline phone services into a single customer premises equipment (CPE), managed via an Android operating system. In February, BSNL also rolled out its Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) service at a competitive starting price of Rs 130 per month, allowing users to access services on Android TVs without needing a separate set-top box.

This move puts BSNL in direct competition with similar services offered by Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, as the demand for comprehensive media solutions continues to rise.

Financial Assistance and Future Plans

In a bid to fortify its 4G network, BSNL is expected to receive additional funding of Rs 6,000 crore from the central government. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has earmarked this financial support for BSNL and its counterpart, MTNL, which provides services in Delhi and Mumbai. Since 2019, both companies have collectively secured funds amounting to approximately Rs 3.22 lakh crore from the government.

This upcoming financial boost is crucial as BSNL has encountered a reduction in capital expenses related to purchasing 4G equipment, with the proposal for this funding soon to be presented for approval to the Union Cabinet. The procurement of equipment necessary for the network upgrades has been entrusted to Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and ITI, a state-run telecom equipment manufacturer.
