Google now allows users to change Gmail addresses without losing emails or account data

Google has started rolling out a feature that allows users to change their @gmail.com address for an existing account without creating a new profile, a development that could benefit millions of Indians who use Gmail for work, banking, education and government services.

What the update does

The new option lets users replace their Gmail username while retaining the same Google Account. All account data — emails, Google Drive files, Photos, Calendar entries, Contacts and access to services such as YouTube and Google Play — remain intact. The change applies only to the visible Gmail address tied to the account.

Old address remains an alias

After a change, the previous Gmail address continues to function as an alias. Emails sent to the old address are delivered to the same inbox, reducing the risk of missed messages from banks, employers or government platforms that may still have the old contact on record.

Rollout and availability in India

Google is rolling out the feature in phases, so availability will vary across accounts. Reports indicate the option is appearing in some users’ Google Account settings, and Google support pages in Indian languages are being updated — suggesting India is among the early markets receiving the feature.

The change is expected to be available via Google Account settings on both desktop and Android devices once enabled for a user.

Limits and security considerations

To prevent misuse and confusion, Google has set limits on how frequently an address can be changed. Users cannot switch addresses repeatedly within a short span, the number of permitted changes is restricted, and newly chosen addresses cannot be removed immediately. These safeguards aim to balance convenience with account stability and security.

How to change your Gmail address

When the feature is enabled for an account, users can visit Google Account settings, open the Personal Info section and select the email-related option to change their Gmail address. The process requires verification of the new address and is designed to work across supported web browsers and Android devices.

Why it matters for India

Gmail in India often serves as the primary channel for financial alerts, education and job communications, and identity verification for public and private services. Many users created usernames years ago that no longer reflect their professional identity or personal preferences. Previously, changing an email meant creating a new Google Account and losing years of linked data and subscriptions.

By allowing users to update their Gmail address while preserving their account contents, Google removes a major usability barrier and helps users maintain a consolidated, professional digital identity without managing multiple accounts.
