Heavy rains have caused significant flooding in Hyderabad as authorities opened the gates of the Himayat Sagar reservoir on Friday night. This action was taken to manage the rising water levels in the reservoir, which led to the Musi River overflowing near the Chaderghat Bridge. The overflow caused flooding in nearby houses and low-lying areas along the river, prompting road closures and heavy traffic jams in the area.
Following the gate opening, the road near the Chaderghat Bridge was closed as a precaution, creating severe traffic congestion. Areas such as Mithila Nagar Colony in Meerpet and parts of Rangareddy district experienced substantial waterlogging. The situation was exacerbated by continued heavy rainfall in Hyderabad and surrounding regions over the past few days.
In response to the growing flood risk, the Telangana Chief Minister, A. Revanth Reddy, had directed the state administration to stay on high alert. Officials were instructed to closely monitor flood-prone areas and take proactive steps for public safety. District collectors were tasked with relocating residents in vulnerable, low-lying areas to relief camps to reduce risks to life and property.
Authorities also ordered traffic stoppage on waterlogged roads and emphasized the safety of causeways. The state electricity department was assigned the responsibility of maintaining an uninterrupted power supply while removing hazardous hanging wires that could pose dangers during heavy rains.
Emergency teams from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), Hyderabad Riverfront Development Corporation (HYDRAA), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) remain on high alert for immediate deployment.
The floodwaters even reached parts of the Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS), one of India’s largest bus stations, affecting bus operations. Many low-lying neighborhoods around the Musi River have been evacuated to relief camps as a precautionary measure.
Residents are advised to avoid traveling during the heavy downpours and educational institutions have been urged to stay vigilant during the Dussehra holidays.
This latest flood situation underscores the challenges Hyderabad faces with heavy monsoon rains and the need for continuous preparedness and effective water management in the city’s reservoirs and river systems.
