Is Chhaava historically accurate?
Answer- apparently not. The story of the second Maratha king, Chatrapati Shambaji Maharaj, triggered a wave of patriotism across the country. But all of that became questionable when descendants of Ganoji and Kanhoji Shirke raised their concerns. The family has reported that the movie paints the Shirke family as traitors when, in reality, they supported the Maratha empire throughout their lives. The family went as far as threatening a 100 crore lawsuit against the film for the wrongful representation of history.
Deepak Raje Shirke, a descendant, sent a formal notice to Lakshma Utekar on 20th February and demanded the inaccuracies be corrected immediately. He stated that his family’s reputation was hurt and that the entire nation thinks of them as traitors whose acts led to the capture of Shambaji Maharaj by Aurangzeb.
Deepak Shirke further stated that he liked the film and that the story of Shambaji Maharaj must come forward but not with inaccuracies. He emphasized his demand to remove the wrongful parts. He also said that if the movie failed to do so, he would take his family’s concerns to street protests.
The Chhaava Controversy and Rs 100 Crore Lawsuit
The director Lakshman Utekar reported that he talked with the Shirke family, apologized to them, and added that the film doesn’t mention the surnames Ganoji and Kanhoji. He said, “We’ve also made sure to not disclose the village they belonged to. Our intention was not to hurt the sentiments of the Shirke family. I sincerely apologize if Chhaava caused any discomfort.”
Bollywood’s latest historical movie, Chhaava, is the untold story of Chatrapati Shamabji Maharaj of the Maratha Empire. The story is played by terrific actors Vicky Khaushal, Rashmika Mandanna, Akshaye Khanna, Diana Penty, Neil Bhoopalam, Ashutosh Rana, and more.
