Rising Trend of Dating App Scams
Dating App Scam: In recent times, dating app scams have been on the rise, particularly in major metropolitan areas such as Mumbai and Delhi. These scams often involve a deceptive approach where individuals engage in conversations through dating apps, leading to real-life meetings that culminate in financial exploitation. It has become a common tactic for individuals, often identifying as women, to entice their targets with the allure of a romantic relationship, only to leave them with hefty bills for meals and drinks, plunging them into unexpected financial distress.
A Shocking Case in Delhi
One recent incident brought this issue to the forefront in Delhi, where a young man fell victim to a dating app scam. The individual reported a loss of Rs 16,000 after meeting a woman from an online dating platform. Sharing his experience through a social media post, he recounted: “I connected with a girl on a dating app who insisted on meeting at a public venue. We chose the popular Bagheera Cafe located on Hudson Lane.” He explained, “Upon arrival, she persuaded me to enter the cafe with her.”
The Deceptive Dinner Date
Once inside the cafe, the woman quickly took charge. According to the victim, “The waiter brought her the menu upon entering, and she placed an order. A few minutes later, she claimed she needed to use the restroom.” Upon her return, the waiter served her a hookah, a vodka shot, and a chicken starter. However, he later discovered that the vodka shots were actually just water shots, adding insult to injury. The situation escalated when she feigned receiving an urgent call, thereby exiting the cafe, leaving the victim to foot the bill.
Returning to Confront the Scam
The disappointment for the victim did not stop there. When he returned to the same cafe with a friend, he spotted the same girl with another man. “As we attempted to enter the cafe, the security personnel prevented us from doing so, as they were aware of her deceitful tactics used against other patrons,” he revealed.
A Financial Setback
The young man expressed his frustration, stating, “Having already lost Rs 16,000, I have no idea how to recover my money.” The detailed bill he shared, dated September 24, indicated a total charge of Rs 17,170 for items that included one king-size hookah, one Long Island Iced Tea (LIIT), one Red Bull, and one chicken lollipop—further illustrating the severe nature of this scam.
A Lesson Learned
As dating app scams become increasingly common, it is essential for users to remain vigilant and cautious when engaging with new acquaintances. Knowing the signs of a potential scam can protect individuals from financial loss and emotional distress. Always meet in public places, keep track of your expenses, and trust your instincts.
