The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially unveiled a comprehensive retention policy ahead of the highly anticipated IPL 2025 mega auction. These changes, announced after the IPL Governing Council’s meeting on September 28, are aimed at redefining team strategies and enhancing the overall competitive nature of the league. Teams have the autonomy to decide how to utilize the retention slots. They can either retain all 6 players outright, use the ‘Right to Match’ (RTM) option during the mega auction, or a combination of both strategies. This flexibility allows franchises to tailor their squads based on their individual strategies and player performances.
3. Introduction of Match Fees
For the first time, the IPL will implement a match fee, ensuring that every player participating in the playing eleven, as well as the impact player, will receive a compensation of ₹7.5 lakhs per match. Franchises are required to allocate ₹12.60 crores annually for this purpose, which is distinct from the auction purse.
4. Increased Auction Purse and Salary Cap
The auction purse has been elevated from ₹100 crores to ₹120 crores, providing franchises with additional financial leeway to secure top-notch talent. Concurrently, the overall salary cap—which includes the auction purse along with incremental performance pay—has risen from ₹110 crores to ₹146 crores. This increase is structured to further enhance in-game competitiveness, with projections to increase to ₹151 crores in 2026 and ₹157 crores in 2027.
5. Continued Impact Player Rule
Despite various discussions about its implications, the BCCI has opted to retain the ‘Impact Player’ rule, which allows teams to substitute a player during a match to enhance their lineup based on the game situation. This approach aims to keep the tournament innovative and engaging for fans and players alike, continuing through at least the 2027 season.
6. Stricter Regulations for Foreign Players
In an effort to regulate foreign players’ participation, new rules mandate that foreign players must register for the mega auction, irrespective of their previous participation in mini auctions. Failure to register will result in exclusion from the upcoming mini auction, thereby ensuring that all players are committed to the league’s framework.
7. Penalties for Withdrawal from Auction
The BCCI has addressed a significant concern regarding players withdrawing their names post-auction. Any player who, after being purchased, decides to withdraw before the season starts will face a ban from both the auction and participation in the tournament for the subsequent two seasons. 8. Uncapped Player Clarification
To further clarify player statuses, any capped Indian player who has not been part of the playing eleven in any format of international cricket over the last five years or does not fall under the BCCI’s central contract will now be classified as an uncapped player.
