Major Upset in WTC: Neighboring Country Surprises Champion Team, Eyes Final Showdown!

The final of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 is set to unfold in June next year, stirring excitement among cricket enthusiasts as nine teams vie for the prestigious title. Currently, Team India is engaged in an exhilarating two-match Test series against Bangladesh, and their recent victory in the first match has propelled them to the top of the WTC points table. Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan team is also making waves by facing New Zealand in a home Test series, marking a significant moment in their WTC journey.

Sri Lanka’s Climb in the WTC Points Table

In a thrilling development, the Sri Lankan team has seized a 1-0 lead in their two-match Test series against New Zealand, following a hard-fought victory by 63 runs in the Galle Test. This match showcased incredible competition, culminating in a nail-biting finish on the final day. Sri Lanka set New Zealand a daunting target of 275 runs, but the Kiwi side could only muster 211 runs in reply. This victory has not only boosted Sri Lanka’s morale but has also significantly impacted their position in the ICC World Test Championship points table.

With this win, Sri Lanka has surged into the top three, raising their win percentage to an impressive 50%. This climb from fourth to third place has relegated New Zealand out of the top three, as their win percentage has dropped to 42.86%. Presently, the Sri Lankan team is trailing only behind the formidable Indian and Australian teams, solidifying their status as contenders in the ongoing competition.

India’s Position as a Strong Contender for the Finals

As it stands, Team India boasts a remarkable win percentage of 71.67%, having competed in ten Test matches with seven victories, two losses, and one draw. The team has nine Test matches remaining, with four of these to be played at home, presenting them with a favorable opportunity to secure their place in the finals for the third consecutive time. India’s consistency and performance in the upcoming matches will be crucial as they aim to maintain their top position.

In addition, Australia follows closely with a win percentage of 62.50%, having won eight out of twelve matches. The Australian team is also keen on reaching the finals for the second consecutive time, especially as they prepare to host Team India for an intense five-match Test series at the end of this year. This series will play a pivotal role in determining the final teams for the championship.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, both Pakistan and West Indies find themselves nearly out of contention for the finals, facing tough challenges ahead in their respective campaigns. As the tournament progresses, the race intensifies, and cricket fans eagerly await the outcome as teams battle for supremacy in the World Test Championship.
