Ravindra Jadeja Surpasses Kohli & Gill in Batting; KL Rahul Lags Behind

The remarkable journey of Ravindra Jadeja in Test cricket over the past four years has established him as a cornerstone of Team India’s batting lineup. His consistent performances have not only garnered attention but have also placed him ahead of other renowned players like Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill in various batting metrics.

A Critical Knock in Chennai

The second day of the Chennai Test against Bangladesh proved to be a challenging one for Jadeja. After showcasing exceptional skill on the first day, where he scored an impressive 86 runs, Jadeja had high hopes of reaching his fifth Test century. Unfortunately, he could not add to his score the following day, marking a missed opportunity. Nonetheless, this innings reaffirmed Jadeja’s growing reputation as a reliable batsman in the Test format, with statistics that often outshine those of established stars like Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and Cheteshwar Pujara.

Partnership with Ashwin

On that pivotal first day, Jadeja entered the crease at a precarious moment for Team India, which had already lost six wickets for just 144 runs. With experienced players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, and KL Rahul back in the pavilion, Jadeja partnered with Ravichandran Ashwin to stabilize the innings. While Ashwin completed a marvelous century, Jadeja showcased his prowess with an impressive knock that fell just short of three figures. Their vital 199-run partnership was a crucial turning point for the team.

Consistent Performances

Despite not reaching the coveted century, Jadeja’s contributions over the past four years have been significant. He has continuously thrived in challenging situations, often stepping up when other top-order batsmen like Kohli, Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Rahul, and Shreyas Iyer have struggled. It is noteworthy that these prominent batsmen have seen their averages decline, further cementing Jadeja’s status as a key player in the lineup.

Statistical Supremacy

Analyzing statistics from September 1, 2020, to the present shows a stark contrast in performances among these batsmen. Kohli has accumulated 1631 runs at an average of 34.70, while Pujara has scored 1355 runs at an average of 30.11. Rahul follows with 873 runs (average 32.33), while Iyer has 811 runs (average 36.86), and Rahane stands at 874 runs with an average of 25.70. Shubman Gill has made 1524 runs at an average of 35.44. In contrast, Jadeja, batting predominantly at numbers six and seven, has scored 1253 runs at a robust average of 39.15, including three centuries and seven half-centuries, demonstrating his ability to convert innings when it matters.

A Complete Package

Among players mentioned above, only Gill has recorded four centuries, while Rahul has achieved three. Pujara is the only one with more than 50 runs on eleven occasions, while Kohli has managed it ten times. Importantly, Jadeja’s dual-role as a pivotal batsman and an outstanding bowler is underscored by his 83 Test wickets at an average of 22.51 during this period, a feat none of the aforementioned batsmen can match. This highlights how indispensable Jadeja has become for Team India, underlining his importance in both batting and bowling departments.
