Karnataka BJP MLA Munirathna Arrested for Bribery and Threatening Contractor

Controversy Surrounds Karnataka BJP MLA Munirathna

Karnataka BJP MLA Munirathna found himself in a significant legal predicament following his arrest on September 14. The arrest was made after serious allegations emerged against him, including threats to kill a contractor and the use of casteist slurs. Munirathna, who represents a seat in Karnataka’s assembly, is now facing profound scrutiny not just from the police, but also from his own party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has issued a show-cause notice in response to the unfolding events.

Details of the Allegations

The first FIR was filed by Cheluvaraju, a contractor associated with the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). According to the complaint, Munirathna demanded a bribe of Rs 30 lakh, threatening to cancel an existing contract if his demands were not met. Cheluvaraju detailed that back in 2021, the MLA initially requested Rs 20 lakh in exchange for approving a solid waste disposal contract, yet after paying for ten auto trippers designated for waste management, he found himself in a difficult position as the civic authorities never approved the provision of the vehicles.

Harassment and Threats

In his FIR, Cheluvaraju claimed that he was subjected to ongoing harassment, including physical abuse and intimidation. He stated that Munirathna not only hindered his work but also slapped him during an altercation in September 2023, creating a scenario of fear and desperation for the contractor.

Additional Complaints and Legal Proceedings

The police have confirmed that the MLA is implicated in two FIRs. The second FIR originates from a BBMP councillor who alleged that Munirathna used derogatory caste-based slurs and insulted his family. The MLA was reported to have stated that Cheluvaraju should not associate with the councillor due to caste differences. Consequently, an FIR has been filed invoking the SC/ST Act and other pertinent sections of the Indian Penal Code.

Police Investigation Underway

A senior police officer elaborated on the situation, stating, “In light of the received complaints, we have initiated two distinct cases against the MLA. The accusations range from intimidation and harassment to bribery and caste-based discrimination.” The investigative process is currently ongoing to uncover the full details surrounding these serious allegations.

Impact on Munirathna’s Career

With significant allegations looming over him, the political future of Munirathna remains uncertain. As investigations unfold, both the BJP and the public will be watching closely to see how the situation develops and what potential consequences could ensue for the MLA. This case shines a light on issues of political ethics and the responsibilities of public officials in maintaining integrity and accountability.
