Escalating Tensions in Manipur: Government Takes Action Amid Student Protests

In response to escalating student protests in Manipur, the state government has instituted a five-day suspension of internet services. The decision, announced on September 10, comes as a measure aimed at curtailing the spread of misinformation, hate speech, and provocative content via social media platforms. Additionally, all government and private colleges in the state will remain closed on September 11 and 12 to minimize unrest.

Reason for Internet Suspension

The notification issued by the government stated, “Internet and mobile data services, including leased line, VSAT, broadband and VPN services, are ordered to be temporarily suspended/blocked for a period of five days from 3 pm on September 10 to 3 pm on September 15 in the territorial jurisdiction of the state of Manipur.” This measure reflects the government’s urgency to restore peace amidst the ongoing agitation.

Clashes Between Protesters and Security Forces

On the day of the announcement, violent encounters were reported between security forces and protesters. Tensions erupted when students and women attempted to march towards the Raj Bhavan, demanding the resignation of the Director General of Police (DGP) and the security advisor to the state government. In efforts to control the situation, security personnel resorted to firing tear gas shells.

Central Government’s Response

Amid these clashes, the Central Government has responded by deploying two new battalions of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), amounting to approximately 2,000 personnel. This move aims to strengthen security in Manipur, which has been gripped by ethnic strife for over a year, resulting in significant loss of life and property.

Deployment Details

CRPF Battalion Number Origin Deployment Location

112 Latehar (Jharkhand) Surrounding areas of Imphal

The Scale of Violence

The ongoing conflict, primarily rooted in tensions between the Meitei and Kuki ethnic groups, has claimed over 200 lives since it began in May of last year. The Home Ministry’s directives include deploying all companies from the new battalions across various parts of the violence-ravaged state, reflecting the serious nature of the unrest.

Role of the CRPF

The CRPF, which has been actively involved in maintaining order in Manipur, is crucial in addressing various security challenges, including insurgency and anti-terrorism operations. Prior to this escalation, 16 battalions were already deployed, reflecting the growing demand for security forces in the region.

Joint Operations and Future Analysis

In a proactive approach, a joint team comprising officials from the CRPF and Border Security Force (BSF), along with independent technical experts, will visit Manipur later this week. This team is tasked with conducting an analytical study of the drones and rockets recently used in attacks within the state, which will contribute to future security assessments.

Conclusion

As the situation in Manipur continues to unfold, the state government and central authorities are making significant efforts to restore peace and stability. The challenges presented by ongoing protests and ethnic conflict underscore the importance of strategic security measures and continuous dialogue among all stakeholders.
