4 Lakh Gold Chain Immersed with Ganesh Idol: Pond Drained for Treasures

The Joy of Ganesh Chaturthi: A Memorable Incident in Bengaluru

As the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with great enthusiasm across India, Maharashtra remains at the heart of these festivities. This year, the immersion of Ganesh idols has begun, marking the conclusion of a jubilant celebration. However, an unusual incident involving a couple from Bengaluru has captured everyone’s attention and offered a remarkable twist to the otherwise joyous occasion.

An Unexpected Oversight

In a bustling neighborhood of Dasarahalli Circle in Vijayanagar, a tech-savvy couple, Ramaiya and Umadevi, decorated their home for Ganesh Chaturthi with a beautifully crafted Ganesh idol adorned with flowers and vibrant decorations. In a festive gesture, they placed a gold chain worth ₹4 lakhs (approximately $4,800) around the idol’s neck. Unfortunately, in the hustle and excitement of the celebrations, the couple forgot that the chain was on the idol as they took it to immerse it.

The Immobilizing Realization

After concluding their prayers and rituals on the evening of September 7, the couple transported the idol to a mobile immersion tank at around 9:15 PM. It was only after returning home around 10 PM that they suddenly recalled the precious gold chain they had adorned the idol with. This sparked a frantic rush back to the immersion site just shortly after 10:30 PM.

The Search Party Begins

Upon arriving at the tank, they inquired with the youths assisting at the site. Initially, those present mistook the gold chain for an artificial one, and it had been immersed along with the idol without a second thought. Realizing the weight of their mistake, Ramaiya and Umadevi immediately contacted local authorities, seeking assistance in retrieving the lost item.

Community Support and Teamwork

The couple reached out to local MLA Priya Krishna, who swiftly coordinated efforts with the contractor Lankesh D responsible for the mobile tank. In a commendable display of community support, approximately 10,000 liters of water were pumped out in a bid to locate the missing gold chain. Despite these strenuous efforts, the chain remained elusive as the night wore on, with about 300 idols contributing to the muddied circumstances in the tank.

Persistence Pays Off

Thankfully, the determination of the couple and the assistance of the community led to a breakthrough. After several hours of painstaking search, which involved sifting through the thick mud, ten local volunteers joined the effort. Their hard work eventually bore fruit as they successfully recovered the gold chain, returning it to a relieved and grateful Ramaiya and Umadevi.

A Unique Reminder of Tradition

This incident, while surprising, highlights the joys and occasional mishaps that come with traditional celebrations like Ganesh Chaturthi. It serves as a reminder for devotees to be mindful of their valuables when participating in rituals. The couple’s story enriches the narrative of this auspicious festival, demonstrating the spirit of community and the power of determination.
