Suriya’s much-awaited film Retro, directed by Karthik Subbaraj, has finally hit theatres and made a powerful debut. However, despite the buzz, the film’s opening day collection fell short of Suriya’s previous release, Kanguva. Here’s a detailed look at Retro’s box office performance, story, cast, reviews, and ratings.

Total Box Office Collection Day-wise

Retro collected an impressive Rs 19.25 crore net across India on its opening day (May 1, 2025), spanning Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi versions. The Tamil version alone contributed Rs 17.25 crore, with Telugu adding Rs 1.95 crore and Hindi Rs 0.05 crore. Despite the strong start, these numbers are slightly lower than Kanguva’s opening day collection of Rs 22 crore.

Movie Review

Critics have given Retro mixed opinions. Suriya’s performance and Santhosh Narayanan’s track are praised, however, the movie’s storytelling and second half have faced grievance.

The film is visually fashionable and sentimental, but suffers from a cluttered narrative and a lack of emotional depth. Suriya’s air of mystery and the retro fashion are highlights; however, the second half feels indulgent, and the climax underwhelming. The track sticks out, whilst the screenplay and character arcs could have been stronger.
