The Indian government has barred the release of the Bollywood film Abir Gulaal, starring Pakistani actor Fawad Khan, following public outrage over the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians, including tourists. The romantic drama, Vani Kapoor’s co -conclusion and directed by Aarti S Bagdi, was scheduled for release on May 9. However, political groups and industry organizations were counteracted, citing the relationship between India-Pakistan.

Following the terrorist attacks in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, the Film Association called for a boycott of Pakistani artists and warned of disciplinary action against Indian growers or technicians working with them.

Fawad Khan’s Response and Industry Reactions

Favad Khan, who last appeared in Bollywood’s Ae Dil Hai Muskil (2016), expressed grief over the attack and stated that his prayers were with the families of the victims. Co-star Wani Kapoor also condemned the violence, calling it “destructive”.

Despite past court rulings dismissing petitions to ban Pakistani artists, political group,s and film bodies have maintained an unofficial freeze on collaborations since the 2016 Uri attack.

Boycott Calls and Government Action

The hashtag #BoycottAbirGulaal trended as social media users criticized the film’s association with a Pakistani actor post-attack. Theatre chains reportedly refused to screen the movie, leading to the ministry denying release permissions. Political leaders earlier threatened protests, stating no film featuring Pakistani artists would be allowed to be released.
