Government initiative to combat spam calls
In a move to enhance the quality of its mobile service, the government-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is set to implement advanced technologies to curb spam calls on its network. This initiative aims to provide users with a more reliable communication experience and will leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) technologies. BSNL is expected to showcase this innovative solution at the upcoming India Mobile Congress.
The Role of TRAI and Recent Measures
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has taken significant steps to mitigate the issue of spam calls. In a recent statement, TRAI highlighted continuous efforts to tackle unregistered telemarketers, resulting in the disconnection of over 275,000 mobile connections associated with spam activity. Additionally, several firms have been blacklisted, reinforcing the urgency to address the spam call problem.
Rising Complaints and Regulatory Actions
This year has seen a surge in complaints regarding spam calls, with TRAI recording over 790,000 grievances from consumers in the first half alone. In light of these numbers, telecom providers received stringent directives to halt promotional calls from unregistered telemarketers. TRAI has expressed hopes that these measures will significantly reduce the prevalence of spam calls, ultimately benefitting users.
Key Directives by TRAI
According to TRAI’s directives issued last month, all telecom companies are mandated to take action against pre-recorded and computer-generated spam calls from unregistered sources. Violators of this rule may face severe penalties, including the loss of their telecom connections. In addition, the implementation of the Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) feature has been strongly encouraged. This feature aims to help users identify genuine calls and avoid spam, catering to a more secure communication environment.
Conclusion
As BSNL rolls out its AI and ML solutions to combat spam calls, coupled with TRAI’s rigorous actions against violators, customers can expect a notable decrease in unsolicited calls. This proactive approach not only reaffirms the commitment of both BSNL and TRAI towards consumer protection but also sets the groundwork for a more transparent and reliable telecom network in India.
